She was She was a principal artist of the Imperial Russian Ballet and the Ballets Russes of Sergei Diaghilev during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Pavlova's dances inspired many artworks of the Irish painter John Lavery. The critic of The Observer wrote on 16 April 1911: "Mr. Lavery's portrait of the Russian dancer Anna Pavlova, caught in a moment of graceful, weightless movement ... Her miraculous, feather-like flight, which seems to defy the law of gravitation"
